Our Insiders Guide to Gay Torremolinos!

Torremolinos can trace back its gay beginnings to the 1960’s, when its very first gay bar, Toni’s was opened. The cosmopolitan, multicultural and tolerant atmosphere attracted visitors from all over the world, including celebrities like Brigitte Bardot, Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner, who enjoyed excellent weather (with more than 300 days of sun each year), the Mediterranean Sea and vast beaches of fine sand. While the 60’s style or architecture is still quite prevalent, the LGBT scene has undergone significant changes over the past few years with a city council keen to embrace the gay dollars, euros and pounds.

Gay Torremolinos is a popular Summer destination, especially with gay boys from Madrid, keen to escape the stifling city heat. Popular events such as Pride and the Mad Beach bear weekend continue to draw record numbers and the gay beach clubs along the Costa del Sol have made the area even more popular with gay visitors.

So whether you want to just relax on the many beaches, go partying in “La Nogalera”, Torremolinos’ very own gay district or hit the shops along the Calle San Miguel, this former fishing village has something for all tastes.

Its streets, full of stores and restaurants, are perfect for discovering the way in which tradition and modernity combine in this town perched on the western shore of Malaga Bay Here you will find Plaza La Nogalera y Pueblo Blanco. The Paseo Marítimo joins the city from Saltillo beach to los Álamos beach, in the most easterly point of Torremolinos. It is easy to reach from almost every part of town: to get there, just head towards the sea. It’s divided into two stretches by the natural projections of Punta de Torremolinos, popularly known as El Morro.

El Bajondillo

El Bajondillo is one of the busiest beaches in Torremolinos, found between Carihuela and Playamar beaches, and can be accessed from the centre through several streets and stairs –known as Paseo de la Playa.

There are two lifts to get to the beach: a municipal lift which is open all year and goes from plaza del Panorama (calle de las Mercedes) to plaza de los Tajillos, and the hotel Meliá lift, which is normally only open in the summer.

El Bajondillo is where you will find the popular gay beaches,El Gato and Eden Beach.
